Firestop Ratings Explained: F-Rating, T-Rating & UL Systems

Every firestop product is tested inside a specific assembly and earns ratings that tell you how long it holds a fire back. You only need three terms — F-rating, T-rating and UL system — to spec and order correctly.

F-rating: how long it stops flame

The F-rating is the time, in hours, that the firestop keeps flame and hot gases from passing through the penetration. The rule is simple: the F-rating must be at least equal to the fire-resistance rating of the wall or floor it is installed in. A 2-hour wall needs a firestop system with at least a 2-hour F-rating.

T-rating: how long the other side stays cool

The T-rating adds a temperature limit on the unexposed (safe) side — it measures how long before the penetrant or the firestop gets hot enough on the far side to ignite something touching it. T-ratings matter most in floor penetrations and anywhere combustibles could sit against the unexposed side. Not every assembly requires a T-rating; your drawings or code official will tell you when it does.

UL systems: the tested recipe you must match

Here is the part people miss: a firestop product is not rated on its own. It is rated as one component of a complete, tested assembly called a UL system (you will see numbers like W-L-… for walls or C-AJ-… for floors). The system specifies the wall or floor type, the penetrant, the annular space, the exact materials and depths, and the resulting F- and T-ratings.

Firestop is tested to ASTM E814 (UL 1479) for through-penetrations and ASTM E1966 (UL 2079) for joints. To install correctly, you match a UL system to your real-world conditions and follow it exactly.

What is the difference between F-rating and T-rating?
The F-rating is how long the firestop stops flame passing through (it must at least match the wall or floor rating).
